Oil leak Mercury 175hp

I noticed gear lube leaking from the water inlet on my Mercury 175hp (Black Max) early 90's model year any idea why the gear lupe would leak from thias area? A new water pump was installed last year, no leaks at that time, no water in oil.

Probably unburned gas/oil leaking down from the exhaust.Post a pic of the location.
You sure there is no water in the oil? Drain it and pressure test it.J

I havent run the motor since last summer, it is defienatly gear oil. It is leaking from the ribbed water intake only on the left side. Pressure test the gear housing? What do I need to do that, at what PSI? is it a leak down test? I will upload a photo later. Thank you for your reply.
