"First off let me apologize for not giving enough information.... life happens...work/kids ect I know you all love your boats as much as me so I thought I would trow this out without due diligence first.

I was out on lake Erie last weekend (first time out with the boat) ran it 8 miles out or so @ 3000 rpm fished, fished, fished, we were drifting. Ran back in again at 3000 rpm. On the way back in I noticed an oil smell. When I got home I noticed some oil ( a couple of tablespoons) on top if the engine. I'm sorry I don't know the proper term, but it is where the Carb bolts to the top of the engine.

Any advice on what or where the oil could be coming from? I just took a quick glance. I need to look more, but I thought I would ask?

The boat is a Four Winns, 5.0L, 230HP, 305 GM

Thanks

"Probably from the Valve Cover

"Probably from the Valve Cover gasket, or the Vent Lines that run from the valve covers to the flame arrester......"

"While on the water, what is the oil level on the D'stick? If it is over the full level, engine may be trying to purge the oil. Was Erie pretty choppy? 3' waves? If you were rolling up and down with the rollers, oil could have accumulated under the valve cover and then burped out of the vent.

I went 10 miles out of the Maumee in Toledo to the light house and had to ride the rollers at 10 mph; not fun. Check each vent line to see if they popped out of the valve cover.

Might be a bad gasket like Bondo said."

"Guy,

I was actually out for 24 hours, Stayed in Bolles Harbor overnight. Monday morning we did run into a storm. Pretty good waves. I am a novice with power boats.... I have had sail boats historically. My wife hated sailing... so I sold the sail and bought the power boat. Anyway...

I do think my oil is slightly over full. I do remember checking it as part of my spring cleaning. I'll check it again, along with looking at the vents ect. If over full I'll loosen the drain plug and let some out.

Thanks for the help"

"Don't mess with the drain

"Don't mess with the drain pan bolt (even if you could get to it). Just wipe up the spill completely, then keep your eye on the motor and the oil gage for a while. You're probably okay.

Jeff"

Thanks Jeff. It's been a busy month. I'll take the kids tubing on Saturday (small local lake) and maybe lake Erie next week.

Thanks for all the help
