I am trying to buy a 1996 Well

I am trying to buy a 1996 Wellcraft 26SE with a 5.7 mercruise I trialed it last Sat and while running about 3000 RPM the oil alarm came on we turned the engine off and raised the cover. We saw oil all over the the lt front of the engine & bilge (facing the engine) we towed the boat and a marine service found the problem and told us the oil was coming from the fuel pump area (ok) he changed the pump and again this week end we trialed it again at around 3000 RPM the same exact problem happen...HELP me here I really want to buy this boat but oil blowing around the fuel pump that mystifies me. I might add that while the boat was running at lower RPM there was a cloud of what smelled like oil burning this was not at the start of the motor it kept this up. The mech said he had no idea why. I have it surveyed and it had 185 compression on all cyls Please help me...

you really need to clean it up

you really need to clean it up and then take it slowly and find the source of the leak. run it with the engine cover off and have someone watch the motor while running it then as soon as you see oil shut it down and locate the source

also if you have it on a trail

also if you have it on a trailer it would be good to do this on the trailer with muffs unless it only happens above 1500 RPMs

"also sounds like your crankca

"also sounds like your crankcase is building up pressure, when the survey was done did you get the compression hot and cold? you might want to do a leak down test also"

Thanks guys I was told the com

Thanks guys I was told the comp test was a cold one. Its seems to only happen whaen the boat is under a load

I am very interested to hear about the root cause of your oil loss. This sounds exactly like what happen to my Mercruser 5.0L...oil shows up in the same area. The Mechanics told me it must have overheated...pressure built up and sent the oil out the dipstick. Apparently no leaks from pan/oil filter/any gaskets that could be seen..BTW the 2003 engine was running great before. I'm told get a new engine.

With all the boats on the market, I would look for another one. Unless you can purchase it at a price that would allow you to replace the engine and still be OK. If its leaking around the pump and the amount is as much as you say. Compression gases must be playing a part in it."

"Yes i am beginnig to believe

"Yes i am beginnig to believe it compression gases are the problem I will reserch the internet and see what a new engine cost installed and then make the guy the offer of a life time. Yes DAve its sounds the same and I think Captain Bill is right, the owner told me it was running fine b4 we tested it. But he had not used it in like a year. Also I talked to anothe mech today and the first question he asked was was it smoking out the engine and I said yes and said oil rings that means oh time.........da"

"Mike
Has anyone checked the oil level yet ??
If the fuel pump failed it may have been pumping fuel into the sump that has mixed with the oil and the sump may be overfull.
Thus the smell, thus the blowing oil.
Do not think the worst untill you have checked the basics.
Cheers
