"I have a pair of 1954 vintage marine 471's. The starboard side has developed a leak in the vicinity of the blower - after shut down a fair quantity of oil runs down along the top of the engine. I'm going to pull the blower this fall, but am wondering in advance what type of internal problems I should be looking for.
Thanks!"

"sounds like valve cover gskt

"sounds like valve cover gskt leaking, also look at gov gskt to head. if you do remove blower look at pisto rings and liners"

"it could be the valve cover g

"it could be the valve cover gasket but, 9/10 its the blower drive tube with the two clamps dry rotted out need to be more specific with the problem let me know dont remove the blower unless you really have to. is there oil on the fuel pump, /.dr detroit"

"Thanks for the responses. To

"Thanks for the responses. To be a little more specific...The valve cover gaskets show no leakage, and there is no oil on the fuel pump. This engine uses a little more oil than the other, but apart from that it starts and runs pretty much the same. It has always been a little noiser and the noise does appear to be from the blower, not the engine."
