Oil injection or premix

"I've posted another thread regarding compression, but figured this deserved its own.

1998 Johnson 90hp

It is factory setup for oil injection, but I've heard that those are problematic. I'm assuming mine is working correctly - it's definitely using oil - but I'm wondering if it's too much or too little. Anyway, I've heard premixing is much easier and safer. I have just a few questions...

1) What is the ratio for my motor? I ordered a service guide, but it's not in yet.

2) Is it as simple as just pouring the oil into the gas tank? Or do I have to do it in 5 gallon jugs and shake it, etc?

3) If I premix a full tank (30 gallons), but don't burn it all, do I have to worry about the oil & fuel separating in the tank while sitting in my driveway? Will it "remix" while trailering to the ramp or during the first few minutes of running?"

1. 50 to 1
2. better to put the amount of oil in 5 gallon jugs and pour into tank..better mixing and more accuate mix...u don't have to shake up the jugs if the oil is in first...pumping gas in the jugs and dumping it into the boat is enough mixing.
3. Some oil will settle over time...when breaking in a new engine with pre-mix in my 75 gallon tank...I simply rock the boat back and forth on the trailer to help mix it back up.

"there is much debate about these critters.

if it is working correctly i would leave it alone.......however i would keep a close eye on the oil consumption.

if you have any doubts about its performance i would just run the pre-mix.

the reason for the variable rate oiling is at idle you do not need 50:1, its would be more like 100:1-------at wot you need 50:1 for lubrication and cooling----------so the vro systems are better than pre-mix if working correctly.........if not working properly you can melt your eng quick."

"The last sentence from David

"The last sentence from David is key...so long as you remember to put oil in your gas you won't have to worry about the quick engine melt down. I'm not a fan of vro, if I had such a motor I would pre-mix."

"I agree with Rollie, not all

"I agree with Rollie, not all this hi tech stuff is what its crapped up to be, a little too much oil is far better than not enough, Hard to hitch hike on a lake."

I fried a piston due to a bran

I fried a piston due to a brand new VRO not working properly on my 98 225 oceanrunner (see separate post/story). After deciding to rebuild I did away with the VRO entirely to eliminate this potentially happening again. Premixing seems fine to me as I now use a better quality oil along with fuel conditioner.
