oil in closed cooling tank

So you inherited someone else's problem? ;)

Oil in the coolant could be due to a faulty head gasket, but in that case, you may also have milky oil in the crankcase.

Gasket sealant in the exhaust manifold could be due to a corroded head or some other type of quick fix.

You have some troubleshootoing to do I guess.

Probably a new head gasket will fix your problem. Get an automotive head gasket for a Volvo 244, 1985-1992, 8-valve. If they ask you for more details, go non-turbo.

When you remove the head, check the exhaust ports, mainly 3 & 4. If they are corroded and wasted away, consider repairing them; or even better if they are too gone, replace the current head with an automotive head for the 244 volvo, non turbo. You can probably get one from an auto wrecker.

The automotive exhaust gaskets will work fine in your engine.
