" 40hp, 1990 Evinrude Mod#TE40ELESR, Ser# G02550498. Oil gauge on console has pegged out and broken the needle. What would cause this kind of pressure in the VRO system? How much pressure should the gauge indicate under normal operation? Many thanks for any help. "

" Are you sure it is an oil pressure gauge? The oil is pulled from the oil tank and then mixed with the fuel in the VRO pump. So there is no oil pressure that can be measured. You might have an oil level gauge, with the sending unit attached to the top of the oil tank. "

" Tom,
I was totally wrong about the gauge. It is a PSI gauge. A white plastic tube about 1/4" runs from the top of the exhaust cover on the port side of the motor to the gauge in the console. What function does this have and should I be worried that it is not working? Thanks.

" That is your water pressure

" That is your water pressure gauge. It monitors the water pressure the waterpump is putting out. I think it is one of the most important of the gauges. Your gauge is probably just rusted out, and I would replace if it were mine. "

" The water pump was replaced

" The water pump was replaced last year and the water circulation is excellent both in water and with muffs. I will replace the gauge asap. Just one more question, any idea as to how much pressure a new gauge should show under normal conditions?
Thanks, Tom and Sparky for your help!! "
