i just had a failure in the tube connecting the oil tank to the oil pump. i replaced the tube and had trouble "priming the pump". i cranked the engine and force air into the tank thru the air relief on top of the tank. i now have oil all the way to the pump but i am not sure the oil is getting to where it has to go. is there a way to verify the oil flow?

You can do a quickie test.

Disconnect and ground the sparkplugs (or engage the engine kill switch if equipped).

Then disconnect the tube (that feeds the oil over to the fuel pump - often connects to a "T" in the fuel line going to the pump) at/near the fuel pump end and turn the motor over.

If the oil pump is primed and working you should get some oil out of that tube.

If you actually want to measure how much it's pumping the process is a little more involved.

You, additionally, would have to temporarly plug the inlet at/near the fuel pump and then run the motor on premixed (50:1) gas/oil at 1500 rpms (so if you don't have a tach you would need a portable one).

You then collect the oil flow, from the oil pump to fuel pump feed in a graduated cylinder.

A 50 horse should normally pump 12-18 cc's of oil in a 10 minute period at 1500 rpms.

mix the gas with oil and run it like a non oil injected engine, then keep an eye on the oil level in the tank. It might foul a plug but it won't hurt anything. Or due what the old man said up ^ there. Ha JB

gents I tried to disconnect the oil line leaving the oil pump but couldnt get to it and be able to close off the line to the tee to the fuel line. but i did notice a fitting on the oil pump, is this a bleeder valve for the oil pump?
