Oil dripping down skag

I notices a spot about the size of a quarter under the skag coming from behind the prop. I know the exhaust channel can cause this issue. but how do I tell if its just oil & gas or gear oil. Its very black and I just bought the boat last month and don't have any idea when the gear oil was changed last. The boat has only been in the water for about 4 hours since I have had it. If the prop seal is bad is that enough time for water to get into the gear case?

I suspect it's exhaust oil but you should change the lower unit grease so you'll know for sure. I do mine every fall no matter how many hours I put on it in the summer.

That's what I was thinking. Thanks Super T for the help. I planed on changing it. I guess I should be looking for a milky looking oil coming out. Or maybe even a really black gear oil showing signs of being to hot.

I've got three of them that drip the black oil. In my case it's most likely Storage Seal that I sprayed in the cylinders last fall. I keep a microwave meal container under them to catch it. If you start with fresh lower unit grease each year, it's easy to tell the difference, especially if your using Citgo because it's blue.

Thanks SuperT, what weight oil should I use in the engine, It an 85 Rude 120. I was thinking 90 would be ok, and where would I get the Citgo lube.
