"I bought a 30.00 oil transfer shiphon pump with a tube that goes down the dip stick hole. I can't seem to get constant draw, just a trickle and I have the tub in at the right level. Deciding that I bought apiece of junk what is the best device for siphoning the oil. Also the oil came out a milk choclate brown but the engine runs great, no fluctuations or starting problems. Is this normal?"

"Milky brown means oil in the water. You need to change it ASAP, then run it a while and see if it happens again. If so, you have either a cracked block, cracked heads, or a leaky head gasket. The latter is the easiest to fix.
The best way to drain oil is a quick drain hose that runs from your pan plug out thru the transom drain hole. This will assure complete oil draining. I have not had much luck with tube pumps, though the last one I bought is a piston type with a hose that fits on end of the dipstick tube. It works OK. The 4.3 dipstick tube has an internal tube that goes to the bottom of the oilpan, so you don't need to stick another tube down inside it. Just hook on the end and suck. (Hmmmmm......)
Good luck!

"Oops, should have proof read. I mean milky brown indicates water in the oil. Anyway, not good!!

"Thanks Rod,
I can't reach the pan plug but there is a treaded fitting on the end of the dip stick so I need the tool that fit there. It was a unexpected find since it run so well. Could it hopefully be sludge at the bottom or ahh!!"

make sure you have an air tite seal at the dipstick. all oil should come out. much easier if warm. number one cause of water in oil is bad exhaust manifolds. get it out and then troubleshoot.

"Art;
That threaded fitting is big right? It should be standard garden hose size. This is to make it easy to adapt your pump to fit.
Again, if your oil is milky brown YOU MUST DRAIN IT AND ELIMINATE THE SOURCE OF WATER IN THE OIL. Water has lousy lubricity, and your main and rod bearings will be shot in no time if there is water in your oil.

start the engine and let it run for a few minutes before you try the pump again. the engine must be warmed up for the pump to work.

I use a thin piece of steel brake line that goes down the dipstick tube. THe oil MUST be hot or forget it! Learned that the hard way.

"I added a Fumoto Valve to my drain plug on my 4.3L and ran clear hose from the valve nipple through the drain hole in the transom into my drain pan. Best $17 I ever spent. It takes the place of your drain plug and has a positive 2 stage lock requiring you to lift it from a groove. I have one on all my cars too. Now, if I can learn NOT to install the oil filter so tight. <sigh> BTW, K&N makes an upgrade to that quicksiver filter. Same filter builder."
