Thanks Sebastian. I have one more question. And to the regular boater its probably a retarded question.Ive searched online and other forums but no one has directly answered it. Do you use regular auto oil or is there a special marine oil?

Im fairly new to boats but a pretty decent backyard mechanic and like to save money doing my own work and firmly believe in trying to match parts with aftermarket items as long as it performs up to marine standards (especially electrial items).
I have a Gas Volvo/Penta 7.4 and need a recommdation for aftermarket engine oil and filter. I know I use a synthetic but cant find the proper oil viscosity or filter number. 1997 year and the engine is a 7.4 GL PLKD. Any ideas?

"John, regular auto oil is fine. I use Napa 15w40 in my AQ130C engine and it seems to work just fine."

The parts are not cheap...nor are they cheaply made. The normal Volvo maintenance parts, i.e., bellows (stick with OEM), zincs (anyone will do) and the occasional seal (stick with OEM here) and the "water elbow" at the drive aren't that expensive. Needing anything else is rare unless you run the drive with water in the oil or hit something "at speed". While some parts are pricy, consider the labor cost of replacing the raw water impeller on a Volvo vs the "Big Black" ones. On Volvo's it's a DIY for almost anyone and can be done with the boat in the water. On the "other one"... its haul boat, remove drive, dismantel drive. This is a part that should be replaced on a regular basis BEFORE its a problem.
I've owned several boats with Volvo's and one with MERCS... Compared to a Volvo, MERCS are a "Rube Goldberg design", with lower quality materials. I was in the process of converting the MERCs to Volvos when a divorce forced the sale of the boat .... a Bertram 25 Soft Top... (a moment of silence please.... sniff...)"
