Off the boat troubleshooting help 1986 Evinrude

Hello all,

I need a little guidance on fixing my dad's Evinrude in my garage (removed from the boat mounted controls). It is a 1986 Evinrude 2-stroke 20HP (E20ELCDC). He pulled it from the boat and I want to be able to check for spark and even try and start it in a drum of water if possible. But I don't have the master control connected. Is there a way to do this (Jumper some of the wires in the large electrical connector? Add a makeshift kill switch?)? I'd hate to clean carb, fuel pump, etc and reinstall to find out its still broken.

Advice would be appreciated, I know my what around an engine really well (motorcycles, cars, lawnmowers, etc.) but this is the first boat engine I have messed with.

Also, any tuning tips or upgrades to do while its out would be great.

Thanks, WW

Well not hard to explain, but kinda hard for you to incorporate some things without some of the boat wiring? You need a set of battery cables. That way you can hook up to the starter solenoid & ground on the engine. When you start the motor it will be able to charge the battery. (Protects the charging system.) You don't need the battery for anything else once the motor is running. You can use a remote starter switch (like automotive) to start the engine. Red battery cable to small post with yellow/red stripe wire (start in gear protection). Careful! You won't have any! All you need to do is ground the black/yellow stripe wire coming out of the power pack to stop the motor (like the kill switch). Careful about 300 volts on that wire (only 1/2 amp, it will zap you like spark plug)! You can manual choke it. Little red lever on the primer solenoid. Be sure the engine is submerged over the lower mounts in water so the water pump primes. The electric starter will make it easier to take compression & check spark!
Edit post: Monitor your temp as you will not have a warning horn. It will not be hooked up since you will not have a control box. Temp gun is best for checking for over heat. Hope I didn't forget anything else. Someone will be along to remind.
