Odd electrical part

Not really an engine issue, but some of the gauges connect to this and I have no clue. My guess is a condenser of some kind...

could be an electrolytic cap....but with the screw on the bracket, it may not be in good shape....

you say the 'some of the gauges are connected to this' - if only their power (+12VDC) leads are going to the device, its very likely its a cap...
 
Possibly the shunt for the ammeter????? If you actually trace out the wires could give you a much better idea.
 
Yeah, I'll be tracing wires soon enough. It's a rat's nest in the DC panel, with all kinds of ungodly splices. I don't know what a shunt or an electrolytic cap are, my only other experience with boat engines was with my Universal Atomic 4, which didn't have either. I'll have to google for those.

Caps are sometimes used as filters to get rid of generator/alternator "noise" that bothers electronics, most usually VF radios. If that is located at the panel, not likely a shunt which are always located at the engine.
