94' 200hp ocean pro seems to smoke alot and theres a good amount of oil residue coming out of the through hub exhaust. Motor has good compression. over 90 in each cylinder. Motors have not been used in over a year. Im going to clean the carbs and change plugs and wires. Just trying to get the heads up on the symptom. starboard motor is the one with the smoking problem. Port motor seems to run fine.

"Running cold will cause it to smoke. Make sure your thermos are not stuck open.
Get one of those hand held laser thermometers, and check each head when warmed up. For comparison, mine idles at 145-150 F, in a tank, no muffs. I measure the temp just adjacent to each spark plug, comparing all six."

It seems like it slows down a bit when the motor runs for a min. I will check the thermos. Thanks Doug.

"Start it up, it runs high idl

"Start it up, it runs high idle for a few seconds...maybe 10 to 15 secs, and then slows a bit, down to 750-800?
GREAT!!! That is the quickstart feature working as it is supposed to.

EDIT: The above is when the motor is warmed up."

The motor will always smoke when first started but as it warms up it should subside. Check the temps because it will not burn the fuel that puddles in the transfer passages if its cold.

Has the engine got the VRO conected ? if so you cannot have any air leaks into the fuel system because it will over oil.

jamie as I told doug in anothe

jamie as I told doug in another posting the vro seems to be connected but the oil lines were cut just before the oil tank. The fuel has been mixed 50:1. and thats how i think the previous owner was running it. i would like to complete the bypass of the vro and clean all unnecessary lines up and get the motor running right. You guys will have to bare with me as im not a evinrude/johnson guy. I always have owned mercs. thanks for all of your help.

"saltlife321, you need to chec

"saltlife321, you need to check the engine temp, its got to run at 143 deg as i said befor the fuel puddles and doesnt atomise properly and the other thing to check is the small recurculating hoses on the block which take excess fuel away from the transfer passages. Basically one way valves."
