OBD Tool

Hi. I'm a newbie here.

Just took my 2007 Crownline LS (new to me) out for the second time since I owned it. Ran great until now. Stopped to pick up my wife's hat, which flew off her head, started to throttle up and I heard a back fire and the boat died. It will not start now. It turns over, coughs and backfires, but will not start.Giving more throttle to start and it wants to, but it still doesn't start. Its a Mercruiser 350 with Bravo out drive.

I checked around the engine, no leaks of fuel, oil or water. 3/4 tank of gas.

I have ordered a Mercruiser motor and outdrive manual from MarineEngine.com. I work on all my own vehicles and this is my third boat. I know my way around an engine compartment, but boat motors can be a challenge, with lots of extras I'm not totally familiar with. I use OBD2 tools for my cars to trouble shoot issues.

Question #1. Is it worth it to purchase an OBD tool for the Mercruiser? Which brand is good? and where do you plug it in? I was going to use this tool to narrow down the problem.

Question #2. Where can I start to problem solve the issue? Fuel? Spark? Electronics?

Thanks for your response and help

welcome to ME.com!

you won't find "an OBD tool". The industry standard is the RINDA toolset. You can buy a stand-alone scan tool or buy their software & cable package. It is what all the marine OEM's train with.....

troubleshooting your engine isn't unlike any other internal combustion engine....a fuel pressure check is a good start followed by checking for spark....you need both and its possible only one is missing....
