"I just bought the boat 1984 21ft Larson. Has the internal fresh water cooling system. I baked it up to the river and tried to start. Battery was to drained, only cranked a few times. The guy had told me it was not winterized as had only used it 3 times in summer of 2005. Philadelphia has had a mild winter yet I know that the carbon in the motor can turn to acid and ruin the inside without being winterized. So any suggestions of what I might want to put in cylinder when starting engine for the first time? decarb? fogging oil?.....any suggestions? Spark plugs were pretty rusty on the outside but end of plug look good, white."

"Not much you can do now, the damage is already done. Hopefully the 'fresh water' system has anti-freeze in it.
My suggestions:
- charge the battery. A nice long slow recharge will do it the most good.
- change the engine oil and filter.
- replace the raw water pump impeller and change the oil in the outdrive.
- if you're not sure of the condition of the engine coolant, replace it... a 50/50 mix should be fine for the Philly area.
- do you know if fuel stabilizer was added to the tank before winter? or if the tank was at least filled up all the way? If not, I'd be leary of using it. Replace the fuel filter/seperator regardless.
Since you already cranked it over, you know it's not seized. A little penetrating oil in each cyclinder porbably wouldn't hurt while you're changing the spark plugs. The best thing you can do for it now, is run it and get fresh oil circulated through it. If you're going to let it sit for the rest of the winter, fog the engine as you shut it down for the last time. The idea behind the fogging oil is to coat the inside surfaces to keep them from rusting.
Sometime before you get underway you'll want to grease the outdrive joints and steering and throttle linkages."

"Yes the fresh water system was done about 1 quart of fluid which I added full strength. Yes I have the battery inside on a float charger. Will be buying a second battery as well. I was looking at buying oil today & filter, I gather 25W-40 mercruiser oil(is this recommended?). Once it got warmer I was going to hook up the the hose to see how the raw impeller was kicking out water before deciding to replace. Definitely will replace outdrive oil. The guy already told me he did not use fuel stabilizer but suggested I mix at least a 5 gallon jug of good gas and pour it in. I forgot to look at the fuel guage but I assume he has maybe a 1/2 tank or less in the tank. ARE YOU ABSOLUTELY SURE ABOUT THE PENETRATING OIL in the cylinders? I was thinking as I change the spark plugs this coming weekend I'd squirt fogging oil in there."

"Any light oil would do the trick. Don't get carried away with it. All you're looking for is some lubrication and something to help clean the thin layer or rust off that formed during the idle months after the oil crept off the cylinder walls. Fogging oil would probably work too, it's a little heavier oil, plus it foams up. I'd put something in there though. It's pretty unlikely that during your first apempt to start it, it got any lubrication to the top of the cylinders."
