not idleling

its a 1977 johnson 85 hp that starts up and warms up but when you take off the fast idle lever to put it in gear it will die, can you help?

Do a compression test ( 34 year old motor after all )--------------And see if you have spark at each cylinder that will jump a gap of 7/16"--------------If those are good then look at fuel issues.------These motors will and often run on 3 of 4 cylinders --Time to trouble shoot.
