"Not Charging? I have a 1987 165 3.7 4 cly Merkcrs, it has a stator on the crank shaft & water cooled Regulator (don't know if thats what you call them) but any way, when running on the river, slow or fast I get around 10.5 volts.
(Had a fully Charged Battery before launching)
I had to take the timing cover off to fix the water seal so I have the parts off the motor,
my question is..can I test the stator and the
regulator being off the motor so I know its good before I reinstall them? Thanks, and Hi Guy!"

Don't put the stator back. The regulator may have a dead diode, the stator has a grounded winding or there is high resstance wiring between the regulator output to the battery.

Install a single wire 60 amp marine alternator. You can buy the whole kit on eBay or get the bracket from a junkyard and fabricate your own assy. and get a reman. alternator to save some cash."

and the Regulator? There is a Marine Salavage Yard near by where I can get some parts, and if I should have to install a stand alone Alternator maybe someone will have a picture of
how it mounts to the 165/3.7 4 cly. with only one belt off the crank to the power stering pump?
(They might have a setup at the salavge place?)"

The stator can be tested w/an ohmmeter. None of the wire leads should be shorted to the stator case or ground. The wire leads can be checked for continuity so the windings are not broken internally.

pully that will replace the stator pully I have now? and is there a picture some where of the conversion showing the location of the Alt and brackets on the 165/3.7?"

There is a guy on EBAY selling

There is a guy on EBAY selling a kit but $400 seems really expensive. He is in my area but I would rather buy a new alternator for $150 and figure out the bracket system.

I would like to see guys post pictures of their Reg to Alt conversions. Please post if you have them.

That's a better price incl

That's a better price including the Alt. I saw a guy selling a bracket mount on EBAY that looked like a factory cast aluminum piece from a car. I emailed him to find out if there was a make and model number on it but he never got back to me. Too bad because it would be a really cheap find in a junk yard. I think he sold the kit w/o alt for over $100.
