non start chrysler 165

i have a stancraft 260 with twin chrysler 165's
inadvertently started starboard engine at high rpm
ran for 1-2 seconds backfired and ignition was turned off
could NOT get it started again
port engine starts and runs fine
what happened,advice needed

Backfire on a cold engine may have damaged the choke. Check that choke plate is mostly closed when engine is cold and off w/throttle in closed position and that you can move the plate to full open with your finger in the carb throat. Backfire may be indicative of a damaged intake valve... check compression of each cylinder.

I did that on one of my 360s and it cost me an enngine--BOTH head gaskets blew out. Suggest you do a compression test BEFORE anything else. Had I done that, all would have been well.
