First time out in about a month or so. The starter seemed to make a grinding-nashing kind of sound... I belive this is the beginning of the end of my starter. Any thoughts?

Troy......

Have a 2001 tahoe with the 3.0 merc. Just broke down this past weekend when the long bolt holding the starter to the engine sheared off. I also was getting a funny sound when starting the boat. No clue what was causing the noise but hopefully will know something tommorrow.

"Troy:

Pull the starter and check the drive gear and shaft for dirt and grime. May just need cleaning and lubrication. Or take it to a shop that refurbishes starters/alternators w/new bearings, lathe turn the armature and install new brushes and solenoid.

I know many techs. say not to use "never sieze" on boat engine bolts but I have for years so they DON'T shear off when removed because they are corroded and SIEZED. A very thin coating on the first 2-3 threads does it. JMO"

"I'm a firm believer in thread lubricant... in fact it's impossible to obtain proper clamping force (fastener pre-load) without it. Even when properly lubricated, only about 15% of the torque applied goes into establishing pre-load, the rest is goes to overcoming friction.
Without the lubricant, more torque is needed to establish the right amount of pre-load (i.e., stop joint leakage, hold things together properly, etc.) Add the stresses from the system and... SNAP!"

"if the torque spec is for a dry fastener- torque it dry - if the book specifies oil, use oil and torque as they recommend.
Adding oil and using the dry torque spec is a sure way to overstretch a bolt into it's plastic range and have it break.
Standard torque specs for bolts and cap screws are for clean dry threads."

"I'm with you 100% Hy Stat. The calculation for obtaining the right clamping force (and therefore the right torque to be applied to the fastener) depends on the lubricant used, or the absence if that is the case, such as interference fit and a few other applications where the threaded fastener is not intended to ever be removed once installed. However, you have to be careful when reading the specs out of the specific assembly chapters beacuse often there are 'catch-all' statements such as this:

"Apply Quicksilver Perfect Seal on threads
of and under heads of cylinder head bolts, and on
threads of all cylinder block external bolts, screws and studs."

The statements are often located in the General Information or Front Matter sections of the manuals.

Quicksilver Perfect Seal contains oils and is non-hardening. It's used all over the engine and outdrive for multitudes of purposes which includes fastener thread lubricant and preservative."

"Pulled the starter today. It's not quite dead yet, but the illness is certainly terminal.
One of the planetary gears shed a tooth which ended up getting ground into the rest of the gears. Got all the loose chunks out and cleaned up the rest. In all there's only one tooth missing off one planetary gear and a couple of teeth a little mooshed on the ring gear, plus all the tolerences out of whack from having an extra hunk of metal flying around in there. Spins smoothly enough to keep it as a just in case spare, but I have zero confidence in putting it back on the engine for any kind of sustained ops.
Off to the parts store!"

Ayuh,...

I've been wrenchin' for 40 years, on about Anything that moves,+ some that don't...
I've been putting the nickel based Never-Sieze on just about Every nut or bolt, that I think that I might ever have to Remove again.....
Especially Lug Nuts,+ Boat Starter bolts....

The torque values are set using my Calibrated Elbow....

With the exception of Head bolts,+ some other specialty applications,...
For which I will break out 1 of my various torque wrenches...
And lube/ seal as per the manual...

Back to topic,...
Sorry to hear about the trashed starter Troy,...
I sure wouldn't Waste the effort of putting it back on Either..."
