Noise when drive is in UP position

Finished installing a rebuild today and the issue I'm having is noise (clanking) from the sterndive when it's tilted in the up position and moved from side to side. When it's in the down postion everything is fine. It almost sounds like the u-joints are hitting the side of the bell housing. The drive is a rebuild, I've replaced the gimbal bearing and aligned the motor. I plan on taking it apart tomorrow so any help would be appreciated.

You really shouldn't be running the motor while the drive is up. It's just for trailering. The U-joints will be very noisy operating at that angle.

What manual did you use for the rebuild ? There is a section i bet on running the motor and drive, in that section should be a warning about running the drive fully up.

If you mean in the fully up position ,it will make noise. In its normal position then the gimbal bearing may not be seated fully

I'm not in the fully up positon. I'd say it's about halfway up and when I move it side to side the noise gets worse. When it's in the normal positon everything is fine.
