"In the last 4 years I have bought 2 new 50HP Mercury's here in France. Both have started to 'whistle' after a few hours of use, and Mercury France can only tell me to lubricate a joint/gasket at the water pump. But the whistling starts again after a few hours; Is this a known problem, is there a permanent solution? (Apart from buying Japanese next time !!)"

"Hi Brian, are they 4 strokes? if so drop gear boxes and grease below drive shaft splines 25-40mm sorts the whistleing out.(had Quite a few 4 strokes doing that after a couple hours )"

"Thanks for your reply Michael

"Thanks for your reply Michael. Yes, both engines are/were 4-stroke 50HP ELPT EFI type. The second was bought to replace the first, damaged in a marina accident. The new one started whistling after a few hours use, just like the first one had. My dealer cured it by greasing the gasket/joint at the water pump, as advised by Mercury France. This was OK for a few more hours of use, but it's started again and Mercury just say - repeat the lubrication !! He has, but how long will it last this time. He managed to do it without taking the boat out of the water this time, but it wasn't easy.
I'll translate your comments and show them to the dealer - I don't know if you are refering to the same joint.
Thanks again."
