No water from tell-tale unless primed j15-ECDE

Have a Johnson 15HP J15-ECDE (1986?). No water was coming from the tell tale so I purchased a waterpump kit and replaced the impeller, housing, etc with the new parts. Used red gasket making compound for metal to metal contact. Allowed recommended set time. Put it all together and no water out the tube. Now if I force water INTO the back side of the tell-tale hose (where the water normally comes out), it will work perfectly. Almost like I have to prime it to get it going. It all worked fine 6 months ago the last time it was out on the water. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

It can take a while for the stream to appear. "A watched pot never boils." How long did you run it before deciding it wasn't working correctly?

Water should come out of the tell tale within 3-1/2 seconds of the motor starting !-----Make sure water is at least 6" above the pump in your test bucket.

It might be close to that. I will check and try raising the level tomorrow and report back. Thanks for the idea.

Water coming out of the telltale does not circulate through the engine or the thermostat.-----It only tells you that water pump is working.----Water should come out of the telltale within seconds after motor starts.
