No throttle in reverse

I have a 98 115 SPL Johnson that I recently purchased that is on a 175
Aquasport The engine has no throttle ( won't accelerate in reverse )
I replaced the cables but this didn't help. Can anyone tell me how to correct this? Thanks in advance.

How fast are you trying to go? The linkage has limited travel in reverse to keep people from getting themselves in trouble going so fast that water comes over the transom. Will only move slightly above idle, when correctly adjusted.
 
That's about all I get. I would have thought there would be enough to at lease help stop you if the need should arise. I guess I'm just use to a different brand of engine. A friend of mine has a 96 GT 150 that has a lot more. Is there anything that can be done to change this? Thanks for the reply.
