Hi All, I'm new at working on outboards, and having a problem with a 87 evinrude 4hp model #E4RDHCUD. This motor Has set for a long time on its side. I took the carb off and cleaned it very well. It had a lot of rust in the bowl so I used a new rebuild kit. The problem is that I have spark, and when I spray a little starting fluid into the spark plug holes it doesn't even sputter. I also checked the reed valves and they seem to be workin fine. I haven't put gas through it yet,but also tried starting fluid through the carb and same results no sputter. I also put new plugs in. Haven't checked compression yet but it blows my finger off the spark plug holes. Not sure if spark is strong enough because it doesn,t look blue. Looks white or yellowish. Any ideas?

first of all , i would be real cautious using starting fluid on a 2 stroke with no oil/gas mixture present in the crankcase. the internals of the motor are lubricated exclusively from the oil/gas mixture. try checking spark with a spark checker if available.

thanks for your replies, But what would cause it not to try to start if gas and oil mixture was put into spark plug holes. Which was a 50:1 mix? I will do a Spark test and compression test this weekend. And will let you know the results.

That model (E4RDHCUD) carburetor has but one adjustable needle valve (slow speed) to be adjusted as follows:

(Carburetor Adjustment - Single S/S Adjustable Needle Valve)
(J. Reeves)

Initial setting is: Slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Start engine and set the rpms to where it just stays running. In segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the S/S needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running.

Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustment, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay auction at:

That model carburetor also has a fixed high speed jet that screws into the bottom of the high speed nozzle that screws vertically into the upper carburetor body. It is a #33 jet meaning that the inside diameter is .033 . Fuel must flow thru this jet before it can gain access to any other fuel passageway... make sure it is absolutely clean!

For manual priming, use only pre-mix in a plastic spray bottle.

Now, if you indeed have compression and proper spark, spraying a little fuel into the plug holes or into the carburetor throat... that should have forced the engine to fire for a short period anyway.

With the spark plugs removed, the spark should jump a 7/16" gap with a strong blue lightning like flame...a real SNAP! Does it?

Let us know what you find.

I have NO idea how to create a new post topic so I can create a new post, so I had to get a message thru somehow, so this is how I'm doing it. Sorry, but I hope u don't mind. I'm just asking #1 how the heck I can create a brand new post to ask a simple question to the community out there & #2..What is a woodruff key for on an out board. Also, what is the largest outboard (in weight & / or hp) I can put on a 12' fibreglass fishing boat? And while i'm at it, does anyone out there have, or know aalot about, a 6 hp Viking outboard model # 64021. Can it be bored out to a greater hp? Thank you

Hap.... Simply go back to the previous page and at about the 7 O'clock position you'll see the white lettering that states "Post New Thread" and it has a blue background. Click on it and go from there.

Update on no start, Tapped on pistons with a brass rod, seemed to increase compression. Checked compression with tester and had about 80#s per cylinder. Put fresh fuel mixture in through carb and pulled three times, WAHOO!!! Started!!! Thanks to all who replied
