No sparkwoodruff key

"My engine died on the water.

"My engine died on the water. Couldn't get it to restart for anything. I pulled the flywheel off, and found that the woodruff key was sheared off, and that the flywheel has rubbed the coils just a bit. The coils don't look to bad though. The flywheel appeared to spin just fine, though when it was on. Could this be the cause of my engine not starting?"

"Depends how far the flywheel had moved from its proper position on the shaft.

Sort out the coils and when you refit the flywheel fit the key so that its straight side is parallel with the axis of the shaft, not with the taper.
Make sure shaft taper and flywheel are clean.
Tighten the retaining nut to the torque specified in the manual"
