 no spark at lower plug, upper plug has 3/8 arc using spark tester
cked compres 75/75
new plug wire ---- no spark
disconnect kill wire at points ----no spark
cleaned points (sanded, carb cleaner)---no spark
swapped condenser (older used one)---no spark
swapped coil( older used one)---noooo spark
can pull flywheel blindfolded!!!!

??? what does the coil look like after hit with 12volt ?? is their damage that is visable
how to ck coil?
engine is 63 40hp evinrude 40373d

Initially the original coil on the top cylinder had spark. Then you installed the bottom coil on the top cylinder location, and you still had spark on the top cylinder. This proves that both of the coils are fine (a good test). However DO NOT make a practice of throwing 12v to those coils... they usually blow apart!

Using an ohm meter, check for continuity from the spark plug boot inner wire coil (the thing that grabs the spark plug top) to the related coil. Have the coil ground wire and the one attached to the points disconnected... you should get a continuity reading from the plug wire to both of those wires.

Use either Lacquer Thinner or Acetone to clean the points, then set them as follows.

(Point Setting Of Magneto Models)
(J. Reeves)

Set the points as follows. Have the flywheel key aligned with the fiber rubbing portion of the ignition points. Adjust the gap so that a .020 gauge will pass thru but a .022 will not. Should there be any question of the points being dirty (touching the contact with your finger would cause them to be dirty), clean them with a small brush and acetone or lacquer thinner.

NOTE:
Should the operating cam have a small portion on it with the word "SET" imprinted, align this portion with the fiber rubbing portion instead of the flywheel key.

Yes, usually a hellava big crack! However, if both coils fired in the top coil location, no need to be concerned about it.

(Magneto & Driver Coil Alignment)
(J. Reeves)
To align the coils properly, have the metal vertical portion of the coil yokes aligned with the inside edge of the bevel that exists on the top portion of the aluminum seat upon which the coils sit. This creates the proper distance between the coils and the flywheel magnets. Faulty alignment creats friction and the yokes of the coils heat up, turn blue and expand.
