I just bought a boat with a 4c

I just bought a boat with a 4cyl volvo penta 230B. I started by testing spark plugs on block (no spark). Then I removed the main wire on top of top of distributor cap and set 1/2 above block (nothing). I replaced the ignition coil today. I have power going to the coil and power going to switch kit. When conection is made power is transfered. Is it ok to have power on both the pos and neg terminals on the ignition coil. Why am i not getting spark?

"I'm no expert but I belie

"I'm no expert but I believe you will have power to both the pos and neg? Did you check and or replace the cap, rotor and points."

I did replace the cap and roto

I did replace the cap and rotor. I did not replace the points but I did check to make sure they worked. They connect and tansfer power when together and when seperated the transfer is terminated. Do you think it could be the resistor. How would I know if it was?

The new coil you put in doesn&

The new coil you put in doesn't have a built in resister does it? It will usually say right on the coil if it does.
I believe that most resisters when they go bad will be cracked or if you can see the spring in it it will be broken but not all of them you can see.
How about the condenser did you replace it.

"Thats true, the new coil does

"Thats true, the new coil does not have a resister. Where would I find the resister. I thought the resister was the small cylinder by the points in the distributor. But I now think that might be the condenser. There is an unplugged wire with a small black rectangle shaped box that says resistor. I tested it for power and it has power. If it is where should I attach it.? Thank you so much for your help."
