"This no start problem has got me baffled. I just picked up a 1957 Johnson 10 hp. It has not ran in two years. Before it was put away, it had a full service. Also, complete ignition system replacement except for the spark plug wires. Myself I replaced the connector in the spark plug boot. I have tested the spark plugs and are fine. I am getting absolutely no spark whatsoever but when I held on to the spark plug wire and took one for the team I got exactly what I expected, one heck of a belt. Now being an automotive technician I have felt this before and it was strong any ideas"

"Well, the magnets are good. If you're getting walloped by juice, the answer may lay in your question. If those wires are old they may be bleeding the spark to ground. For the five bucks it costs to replace the wires, I'd start there. Remember to get 7mm stainless/copper core spark plug wire and get comperable connectors and boots.

After that, start with the points, you dont necessarily need to sand them, but if they are dirty, clean them with laquer thinner and piece of white writting paper. Open the points by turning the flywheel. Put the paper between the contacts, then drip a few drops of thinner on contacts. Close the points by turning the flywheel. Pull the paper out while they are closed. Repeat untill paper comes out clean. Once they are clean, give them a puff of compressed air to clean up the area. Make sure they are gapped to .020". The condencers rarely go bad, but can be the problem some times if they are old.

If your motor has a kill switch, Look at these black wires for cracks under the mag plate. If these wires are cracked the spark will go to ground and kill the spark.

Hopefully after going through your mag plate the spark will return. Good Luck."
