"I have a 1981 15 hp. evinrude. just it 2 weeks ago. since then changed impeller, thermostat, fuel pump, rebuilt carbs, adjusted carbs. took it out and it ran great. next time i went out it didn't sound right. so i pulled plugs while running #2 had nothing but #1 was fine. changed coil and still nothing. any advice. i've seen on here that the power pack usually doesn't go bad for just one. thanx adam"

"yes it can, power pack .I know for a fact it can and has. dont rule it out, but make sure first"

"Adam.... Did you actually test for spark or are you assuming that there is no spark just because that cylinder isn't firing?

What is the compression readings of each cylinder.

Remove spark plugs and test spark using a spark tester where a 7/16" gap can be set, The spark should jump that gap with a strong blue lightning like flame.... a real SNAP! Note that the 7/16" gap is important.

No tester? Read on.....

(Spark Tester - Home Made)
(J. Reeves)

A spark tester can be made with a piece of 1x4 or 1x6, drive a few finishing nails through it, then bend the pointed ends at a right angle. You can then adjust the gap by simply twisting the nail(s). Solder a spark plug wire to one which you can connect to the spark plug boots, and a ground wire of some kind to the other to connect to the powerhead somewhere. Use small alligator clips on the other end of the wires to connect to ground and to the spark plug connector that exists inside of the rubber plug boot.

Using the above, one could easily build a spark tester whereas they could connect 2, 4, 6, or 8 cylinders all at one time. The ground nail being straight up, the others being bent, aimed at the ground nail. A typical 4 cylinder tester follows:

..........X1..........X2

.................X..(grd)

..........X3..........X4

i did a compression and it 90

i did a compression and it 90 and 86. while it was running i pulled #2 wire and nothing happened. i then pulled #1 wire and stuck it on #2 plug and it backfired and died. probably stupid test but wouldn't that mean it has no spark to #2

"pull each wire seperatly use

"pull each wire seperatly use a tester to visualy
confirm there is no spark.compression is ok.
check all wires coming from stator going to pack
including connections{plug in typ}
if you have a tester volt / ohm check pack input,
stator output"

i have a dmm what would the pa

i have a dmm what would the pack input and stator output read. the manual sais there is no way to test it but to replace it. i don't have a way to test the spark or make one. thanx for the help

"if you have input to pack and

"if you have input to pack and no out put from pack, chances are it is bad.
take a flat head screwdriver plug it into the #2 wire.
then hold it 7/16 away from block and spin engine
you might get a shock, but you will be sure it is not fireing.
Testing packs is not in the scope of a home mechanic simple diagnosing is ."

if i had no output from pack h

if i had no output from pack how could #1 cylinder work. engine runs fine on one. #2 still has no spark
