"I have a 1992 Evinrude XP 200 hp outboard. I've been running the engine with no problems since I bought it in July. I've added new gas lines, filter, fuel valve, clamps, etc... which helped get fuel to the engine much better. The problem I'm having now is that I can't get any spark to the spark plugs. There is power getting to everything that I can see...checked it with the volt meter...and the wiring looks fine. Tried for an hour to start it up, but nothing. After checking for any faulty lines, etc... my buddy and I decided to try starting it again...started right up...turned motor off to get the items I needed to winterize the boat...tried turning it on again and no spark...anybody have any ideas of why I can't get a spark? Motor is turning over fine and there is fuel in the cyclinder....checked plugs for a second time to see if there was a spark, nothing. I'm at a loss here...I know its probably something stupid, but just can't figure it out...thanks for any assistance, Skip"

"Remove all the spark plugs.

"Remove all the spark plugs.

Disconnect the large RED electrical plug at the engine. Crank the engine by using a small jumper wire from the battery terminal of the starter solenoid to the small 3/8" solenoid nut that energizes the solenoid (not the 3/8" ground nut).

NOTE... The engine must crank over at least 300 rpms in order for the stator to energize the powerpack. Keeping it simple, a slow cranking engine will not provide spark to the plugs.

If you now have spark, in all probability the ignition switch has a intermitent short, in which case replace it.

Let us know what you find."

"Alright, so I need to make sure the rpms are over 300...if the rpms are not that high I'll have to replace the starter correct?

Where is the ignition switch located?

Thanks again for the help, Skip"

"Low cranking rpms could be du

"Low cranking rpms could be due to a faulty battery, a good but low battery, loose cables or tight cables with dirty connections, or a cable that is corroded internally.

The starter may be perfect, and usually is, but the above problems will result in a voltage drop which in turn cause the starter to crank slowly.

The ignition switch is where you insert the ignition key."

"I'll make sure to check all that today. I put the charger on the battery, so I'll see if that helps. Thanks again for the help and I'll let you know how it turns out, Skip"

Exactly where is the model/ser

Exactly where is the model/serial number going to be. I have a Johnson 85 horse V4.

"Alright, replaced the power pack and all plugs are firing. The power pack was a used one, only cost me $40. I had to make a couple modifications with one plug and a couple wires because it was a 1994 pack instead of the 1992. Its funny because the power pack is exactly the same and the wiring is the same, just one different plug for the cut off switch. Oh well, I don't make em' I just play with em'...;)...anybody know what idle is supposed to be? Its running about 1500 rpm's now, which has to be too high...thanks again, Skip"
