No spark in a 1970 evinrude

" We bought a boat a few days

" We bought a boat a few days ago, before we bought it we made the guy start the motor...it ran in the driveway with the earmuffs on for 30-45 min without a problem... we brought it home and took it out on the lake.. it started without a problem but once we got out on the lake the motor just quit. we got it restarted and it quit again... this happened 6-7 times. we finally got it back into shore and now we can't get the motor to fire at all. any ideas what this could be? any input would be greatly appreciated!!! "
 
Take your spark plug wire out

Take your spark plug wire out of one of your three cylenders and put a screw driver in where the metal clip that goes on the spark plug and then get it close to some metal on the motor.(NOT NEAR ANY GAS!!).(use a good plastic screw driver so you won't get shock or thick rubber gloves) and have some one try to start it. you should see spark from the screwdriver to the metal on the motor. If not your (voltage regulator or rectifier) is probably bad. Have fun. If you do have spark mthe its a fuel problem. Check for air leaks.
