"I recently acquired a 1974 Evinrude 50HP that supposedly ran all summer long. It won't start now after some torrential rains and has no spark. What diagnostics can I perform, and if what parts are interchangeable with a early 70's 50 JOHNSON?

Thanks in advance!"

"50473 is the model #, if that

"50473 is the model #, if that helps anyone...and I do not have the model # for the JOHNson but the power heads look identical, except that the JOhnson is electric shift."

"Those engines are two complet

"Those engines are two completely different animals Mike. Interchange nothing.

Remove spark plugs, disconnect the large RED electrical plug at the engine. Crank engine to test spark bu using a jumper from the starter solenoid battery cable terminal to one of the small 3/8" solenoid nuts.

Use a spark tested where you can set a 7/16" gap.... the 7/16" gap is important. You can build a cheap tester as follows.

(Spark Tester - Home Made)
(J. Reeves)

A spark tester can be made with a piece of 1x4 or 1x6, drive a few finishing nails through it, then bend the pointed ends at a right angle. You can then adjust the gap by simply twisting the nail(s). Solder a spark plug wire to one which you can connect to the spark plug boots, and a ground wire of some kind to the other to connect to the powerhead somewhere. Use small alligator clips on the other end of the wires to connect to ground and to the spark plug connector that exists inside of the rubber plug boot.

Using the above, one could easily build a spark tester whereas they could connect 2, 4, 6, or 8 cylinders all at one time. The ground nail being straight up, the others being bent, aimed at the ground nail. A typical 4 cylinder tester follows:

..........X1..........X2

.................X..(grd)

..........X3..........X4

If you now have spark, the usual cause is a shorted ignition switch. Let us know what you find."

"thanks joe

If there is no spark after that procedure, what next?

Should I be looking at the coil and power box again.

Also, the engine components look identical. I still should not attempt to interchange either of them?

thanks in advance..."

"Mike..... Don't get ahead

"Mike..... Don't get ahead of yourself. The ignition terminal contacts can be shorted and still the connections between the battery terminal and the solenoid terminal of the switch would function just fine.

At the present, you're not actually looking for a shorted ignition switch, you're simply trouble shooting.... a process of elimination.

What you find eventually leads one to the problem's source."
