maybe someone can help me. last summer i just put my 1979 glastron in the lake. as soon as i hit the no wake, the boat stopped, RPM reved real high, and the boat died out. a few people said i broke the shear pins. others said it had no shear pins. we are now trying to fix it for the weekend and we took the outdrive apart and all looks fine. we tried to put it back together and no reverse gear. we tried to adjust the cable but no luck. can someone please help. holiday weekend coming up. thanks. 1979 OMC 800 is the outdrive.

So the shaft splines were good ?

You tried a different prop? See if the prop is good then the coupler went.

You will have to be a little more specific. Whats is wrong now.

Heres is the test. With the boat in gear, if you turn the prop, if the prop turns and the ball gears move then the coupler went. If th prop turns and the gears do not move, it's the shaft splines went in the upper.

the shaft splines were good. the prop turns in gear, and freely in neutral. but in reverse, also freely. there is a small wheel with teeth on it and the end of the cable with the same teeth. they are both good. someone said they have to match up exactly as they came off. thats my problem i think.

Ok one more time.

Power comes to the drive shaft that goes thru the transom from the coupler that is connected to the flywheel. On the end of the shaft is a ball gear.

That ball gear turns a ball gear on the upper drive, that turns a gear, that turns another gear that turns a shaft with splines that turns another shaft that runs thru the water pump all in the upper. Now that shaft in the upper connects to the lower shaft.

There is a clutch dog, that moves side to side, one side is forward the other side reverse.

You say the prop turns. But the ball gears do not move in reverse. In forward it locks when you turn the prop when the throttle is in forward ?

The clutch dog went ? Aint the first time. And your in luck just saw it on ebay do a search for stringer clutch dog.

Some extreme cases the mating surface of the gear with the dog is worn so bad needs replacement. Your in luck also there saw the gears on ebay.

Might just be cheaper to buy a good lower complete.

I got a life, a wife and 4 kids and my own stikin boat to get ready.

My wife said she would like to have a family day tomorrow on the boat, it's only been 3 years the last time she set foot on the boat so i'm busy trying to get mine in the most absolutely best, perfect condition so we don't break down 20 miles in the middle of the bay.

Thats why i have not been online. Be patient and someone will reply, we know you need help, and feel your pain.

I have another question. the gears are engaging when the motor is off, but when the motor is running the prop is not turning. what could be the problem?

sorry. the ball gears from the inboard right where the motor tilts are turning but the prop still doesnt turn. could that be the clutchdog or something else?

the engine all put back together. lever in forward, cannot turn it. lever in neutral, will turn. lever in reverse, cannot turn.
