No reverse or neutral

Just replaced my water pump in my lower unit on my 2006 Mercury 40HP Bigfoot and now I have a problem with the prop turning in neutral and no reverse

If this is a splined shift shaft I believe about 1427 people have had this happen this year alone.------Remove lower unit.------Put lower unit in neutral.----Put control in neutral.----Now assemble again.----Note--- the clutch dog may be spring loaded and jumps into forward when you are not looking.-----Or put lower unit in forward and control in forward before assembly.----Fairly easy concept to understand and you will not make the mistake again.

I removed my lower unit and replaced the seal on the shaft now the shaft for the gear selector spins freely inside the lower unit did I mess something up??

If you pulled the shiftrod up while you were working on it you may have pulled it out of the shift cam.------Serial # of your motor is ??

1B293287 and yea that’s what happened my shift shaft spins freely in my lower unit

With that serial number I see that the shift system is different that earlier motors.-----Revisit the way you disconnected the shift rod.
