I recently bought a 1996 75 hp mercury outboard. when I bought it reverse was not working. I unhooked the cable and put in gear manualy
after that it seemed to work fine. I put it in the water and (of course) it would not go into revers. it makes clunking sounds and will not engage could this be a simple cable adjustment? ahead of time for any help

Re: no reverse on 75 hp mercury

Might be - cable not turning the shift rod enough to completely engage the clutch with the reverse gear (which would give you a clunking sound) - so anything from a stretched cable to faulty linkage at the powerhead OR you have a toasted clutch dog from the previous owner "granny shifting".

If the dog is toast you have to completely tear down the lower unit (or live with no reverse)....

Re: no reverse on 75 hp mercury

Most likely, but could also be the linkage that the cable attaches to up at the powerhead end of thing - something could be broken or (slipped) or binding up that is not letting the shift rod fully engage.

Or it could even be a problem at the shifter (control) end.

Re: no reverse on 90 hp mercury mariner

I have a 1981 mariner motor that has no reverse in it and it has a new impeller in it and new plugs and fuel lines what would cause me not to have reverse. i have taken the cables off cause they were old.
