"Forward and neutral gears work as usual, just can't move the shift lever back to reverse. No noises, nothing else unusual. Any suggestions?"

Tried shifting both when running and not. Already checked for loose parts or any obvious disconnect - no luck finding a clue.

the next step,...would be to remove lower unit,and see if prob is in it,(and prop shaft needs to be spinning in order to fully engage shfiting parts)or,in upper shifting parts."

"Hi again: We took the lower unit apart last night, found the problem. A small part had come loose from the "shifting fork." Shifting works now! However, can you tell us how to get the propeller shaft back in with the two ball-bearings and the spring? Is there a sleeve that keeps the bearings in while the shaft slides in or something? Thanks much for your help again!"

put the spring and balls in propshaft,grease them good to help retain them,inst them,in the grooves in the clutch dog....and hope one of those ball did'nt fall off,.....and if u start now,u will have it in there this time tomorrow!.

Hubby and buddy will try this tonight. Then they will try to give me more of a description of what happened to the part and I will will send to you!

They have another question too: a short round gear, one side has groove and the other side doesn't, 3 tabs/dogs on each side - which way does it go back on the shaft?? I guess when it came apart it just came all apart at once so it's hard to tell which way to put it back.

(How's that for a flaky description??!!) Thanks again for your ongoing help -"

"Yes, I agree, and you are no doubt very wise to ask the question. Besides, if "Reverse" stopped working one does wonder which gear is next - it might not be as optional as Reverse out on the water

I passed this all on to "the boys." Hubby is good basic mechanic and buddy is a pro Chevy mechanic, so they should be able to figure it out! Will report back to get your opinion again tonight or tomorrow!"

Hi again: It may take even longer to PITA than you estimated - they already lost one of the little bearing balls!! Can you tell us what those are called exactly so we can get new ones locally?
