Took the boat out for the first time yesterday. Great time aside from rough idle and no reverse. Anyone have any experience with this? I’m hoping the rough idle is caused by the incorrect spark plugs (I’ve ordered new ones). More in my previous post.

If it has an 88 ( other years will fit ) lower unit , I would almost bet that reverse balls are missing or sheared off.

Looked at parts diagram and only “reverse” parts I could find were “reverse lock link” and “reverse lock lever”

Really ?-----Look in the gearcase parts.------Find the balls ( 4 of them ) in there.----And 2 of them for forward and 2 for reverse.

Drain the gear oil.----Remove prop.-----Find the 2 screws that hold the bearing housing in place.----Remove those 2 screws.----Remove bearing housing.-----Remove reverse gear.----Inspect look for 2 balls.

Could it potentially be the shift linkage that’s broken?

I tinkered with it yesterday but couldn’t figure out how to gain access to the shifter linkage linkage. It’s tucked under the engine.

There should be 2 washers , one on each side of that flange.----Washer not in the video.----And perhaps plunger should be pushed to move / hold the balls in order to solidly engage the drive.

According to the attached parts diagram, there’s only the one washer. See link. It WAS o the opposite side of the gear. I installed it how it’s shown in the diagram and then bench tested it in a trash can filled with water. Smooth operation cycling through forward/neutral/reverse.

From what I can tell, the binding is the operation of the spring/balls, while the shaft is decompressed (balls pushing outward). When the shaft is installed, the spring is compressed and the pressure is released off the balls.

Sorry.-----The shaft assembly I have here has 2 of those washers.----And some years show 2 of those washers.----And I have more than 1 of those lower units around., ones with clutch dog and some with the balls.
