no reverse 1977 120

Hello I have a 77 galaxy 120 hp mercruiser. I pulled the lower unit greased the ujoints and also replaced impeller, replaced throttle cable and upper shift cable. I started the adjustment procedures where you push the lower cable and turn the prop counterclockwise til prop engages then pull the cable while turning the prop clockwise till prop stops / engages.....it never stopped. its a new project boat and i'll almost swear it had reverse when i installed the lower unit... when you move the cable with your hand at the engine the cable is tight but it does move in/out. I need someone to point me in the right direction if possible. thanks

Re: no reverse

You pulled the entire drive? Did you make sure the outdrive and the shifter were in forward position before installation? It takes a bit of work when installing the lower to the upper and the drive to the housing. And it doesn't take much at all to pop out of forward while trying to install everything.

Re: no reverse

Yes I did remove the upper drive after i removed the lower, I put the drive back on as a assembly.

Maybe I do need to pull it down again, i took it apart in foreward gear, but something might have moved during reinstallation. it was hard to snug up the last 1/4 inch or so. but the shift lever is lined up. With the foot trimmed in the up/out position you can see it when you work the cable.
The shifter had to be replaced with the cables. when in reverse i can see the shift lever on the foot and it looks like its all the way to the port side... 10 or 11 o'clock position

Re: no reverse

Bronze shift arm MUST be at 12:00 oclock as well as the prop spun lighty c'clockwise until it is locked in F gear.

You most likely did not have the lower shift shaft in full forward when the bronze arm was installed on the shift shaft.......The splines shaft end must be spun clock wise while turning the prop c'clockwise, then when you lower the upper case down, you must align the bronze shift arm to the splines and it must be at 12:00

Re: no reverse

Ok i pulled it down this afternoon and i have included a few pics of what is wrong please tell me what you think.

this is the brass shift arm, it must have been in a bing when i installed the drive last because it has a fresh sliver missing...

I dont think we need to tell you anything more than what the pictures show..............

Re: no reverse

Thanks guys for pointing me in the right direction, you have been a great help!!!
I am guessing the bronze arm can be reused but the cable is toast. would it be better to buy a complete cable kit with bellows or just the inner cable??
