No Power

"I have a 17.5ft Shetland powered by a Mercury 60 ELO and over the past few months she doesn't have the power it used to have and I can only get 4200 RPM, which is barely hitting the power band and as a result is almost 10 knots down on max speed.

I have just had it serviced which included new sparks plugs and having the carbs cleaned and re-jetted, and with the prop not under load it would rev to 5900 RPM, but back in the water it made no difference and I can only get 4200 RPM max.

I have noticed that there is a lot of weed around the hull, but I doubt this can slow her down by 10 knots.

I am also tempted to drop one size in prop size, but this won't solve where the power has gone.

Does anyone have any ideas why I am down on power."

clean them weeds and see how it performs. You may need anti fouling paint. Not good for the motor to rev to 5900 in a no load situation.

"It was antifouled last year when the boat came out of the water, can the weed really reduce the engine power that much.

I had the engine muffs on when it was reved to 5900, although it is only supposed to do 5400 rpm, just wanted to see that it would rev beyond the 4200 I am getting in the water."

A dirty bottom has a drastic effect on speed. A motor wiil rev to 5000 with no load even on 1 or 2 of 3 cylinders. Not a good test or safe test for the motor.
