No power to the starter?

Hello All,

I have a 1987 35hp Mercury engine. Last season I could get the boat to fully crank and start out of waterconnected to the hose. But when I dropped the boat into water it would crankvery slow and not start. Now this season it fails to even crank in or out. I get no powerto the starter. The trim on the engine still works so I think I am getting somepower still to the engine. I also replaced the battery and it is fully charged. Is this a starter issue or some other electric problem?
Any input is much appreciated!

Thanks!

Okay, I was able to get the connections worked out and am able to get the starter to barley crank now again. The starter spins the motor maybe 1 rotation every 2 seconds. Sounding like rump.......rump.........rump........ The motor seems very locked up and hard to spin. I tried to by-pass the starter and pull start the motor to see if this would work.. but I could not even pull the cord to spin the motor. Then I pulled the spark plugs out and was able to get the starter and motor to spin just fine. But when I put them back in it locked up again.

Does any recognize this issue?

Something is dragging badly. Your lower unit might be damaged from water getting in and rusting everything. You'll have to drop it to find out.

Thanks for the reply Jeff,

What exactly does it mean to drop it? Like uncover the prop and drive shaft thing and see if any of the metal is rusting and sticking?
