" I just bought an engine and did not check the gear oil, taken the guys word on it. It was a never used unit. I ran it for two hours until it started shifting with a clank. I checked the oil (too late) and found it smelt burned and no oil came out the fill hole. Only a grease like substance on the magnent with some fuzzies. Should I tear it appart or hope for the best? I started pulling the lower unit apart, but stopped before taking the shifting rod apart. To go further or not? Any help is greatly appreciated. cheers, Troy "

Troy.... The unit should be torn down in order to inspect whatever damage may exist.
