no forward gear

I have a 1999 Yamaha 25 horse 2 stroke with electric start and helm steering. About three outings ago it started making a clicking noise before going into forward then it would slam into gear (if any throttle was applied at the time). So I decided to change the lower unit grease hoping that was the problem. It wasn't. Now it doesn't want to go into forward at all. I just clicks. My question is, is this something a non-mechanic should tackle? Or should I just forget it and hire a pro to do it? If I go that route, how roughly should it cost me?

Remove control cable at the motor and see if it can be shifted manually at the motor.-----If yes then maybe the control box / cable need to be looked at.

The lower unit doesn't just go bad by itself. It probably needs some adjustment on the shifting cable. Had this happened to my Yam 115 four strokes also. I jumped the gun and bought a brand new lower unit and it's still sitting in my garage now. Good luck

It's gonna live! I took the linkage off and I can get it in gear (so I know it isn't the lower unit) but there is something wrong inside the cowling that's preventing it from shifting properly.

adjust the cable to give it longer throw for the forward gear. Do it slowly until you can get it into forward gear. Then try the reverse and make sure you can still put it in reverse without any issue. If you do then you need to back it out a bit for the forward.

Wow! Thanks for all the help! But I'm not quite out of the woods yet. I just came in from working on it (it's hot out there) :0 --- It seems that the shift cable is 3/8ths" too long. Everything has been sucked up to the max. There are no more adjustments. The only thing I know to do is saw off the threaded end (aft end) of the cable, which I dread, because I don't have a working dremel tool.

I installed everything myself, the motor, the controls, the helm, everything. Everything, including the helm end, is adjusted to its shortest limit. The cable is too long. There is no more slack at the "control" or anywhere else. So how do I shorten it without "sawing anything off"?
