Hello,

Johnson 115 four stroke 2004 My boat has been sitting about five months.. Longer than ever before.. went out to prep for may fishing and the engine wouldn't turn over, n crank just a hum from the motor... Checked Neutral ,checked bulb, checked cables, all electrical worked like trim and tilt, horn ect... went and bought a new battery cause cranking amps only showed 600 amps.. new battery no difference...so I can see neutral in motor go from in gear and out ect... so not sure next step in diagnosing... Any help would be appreciated..

Thanks,

Chuck

A hum from what motor? The engine itself, or the starter motor?

If the starter motor is humming, then voltage is getting to it....that would make me think the solenoid and it's picking circuits are in order.

Try taking a very heavy wire from the positive of the battery directly to the big red +12v lug on the side of the starter. The instant you
touch that wire to the +12v lug on the starter, it will turn over unless the starter is bad.

Another possibility....if this HUM is the starter actually running and the bendix gear is simply stuck down (rust corrosion), then free it up.
Make sure it will rise and drop on the starter drive shaft freely.

Don't get your fingers chopped off. This is a very dangerous area to be working on....starter drive gear and flywheel....
