No crank, but starter is good.

Hello all,
My very old 9.9 Evinrude won't start on electric.
It WILL start and run when I use the pull cord.

I took the starter off, and used jumper wires to ensure the starter does in fact spin.

When I push the Start button, nada.

How can I check the Start switch to see if it's bad? Short of buying a new switch, I have no clue!

Any other ideas of what it could be?

Talk about design flaw, you have to pull the fly wheel to get one of the bolts out of the starter. If the bolt was 1/4" shorter, it would clear the flywheel.

Thanks in advance!

check and clean your battery connections first...try another battery...do you have a voltmeter and know how to use it?

If it turns out that your starter button is in fact defective you can get a rubber covered 60 AMP pushbutton at Auto Zone , dvanced Auto or Orielly's Good luck

Battery is fully charged, clean connections, yes I have voltmeter . I did an ohm test on the battery leads, depressed start button, and still had no resistance. Not sure if that means anything.

although, the connection at the starter was pretty cruddy. Since been cleaned.
havent tried to start since then because I pulled the rewind off and replaced the cord, then ran out of time.

the neutral safety switch has nothing to do with the motor running. the neutral safety switch only works on the electric starter if it is bad the starter will not work. The starter system on these motors is a little strange as they do not use a solenoid. The push button is wired right to the battery the positive cable connects to the switch and the negative connects to a ground on the motor. On the other side of the push button you have a red wire that goes to the neutral switch on the other side of the neutral switch another redwire comes out and goes to the starter if the switch is bad no power gets to the starter. Just prevents the starter from working in gear. do a continuity test on the switches set your meter so it beeps put your probes on both terminals of the push button if it beeps when you push it its good same with the neutral safety switch make sure you disconnect the battery first

Good to know, thanks. I'll try that out.

SOLVED!
Bad ignition switch/button.
Trimmed away the shrink wrap and put on a jumper line, fired up.

Thanks for the help folks.
