no choke and wont start

noha12

I have a 72 Johnson stinger and I bought a new control box because the wires were burnt on the old box, and now that I hooked up the new box I have no choke and it won't turn over. Any ideas?

We need more information ----------What colour is the plug on the motor ( black or yellow I assume ) if it is a 72 !---------------What colour is the big plug on the new control box ( red on newer boxes ).---------------Or is it simple a " new to you used box "--------------- let the folks know the details including the model # of the engine..

Ok, the plug is black on the motor but I'm not sure what your talking about on the control box. When I picked up the box there was a red wire that was cut and a a gray or green wire that was not connected. I connected the red wires together and re attached the other wire. Here's the thing I had the choke working before it attached the wires, the red wire seemed like it was part of the ignition. Control box is in neutral and is aligned on the motor in the correct place

The control box would have a big plug that plugs into the black plug on the motor, What colour is it?--------------I think you have to proceed carefully here , as it is easy to do a lot of damage.-------------Look for wiring diagrams and check everything before hooking up a battery and turning the key !----------------3 cylinder or 4 cylinder and a model # is needed !!!!

Ok, I was mistaken by your last question. The plug on the motor is yellow and the plug on the control box is black. It is a 3 cylinder and model number is 65ESLR72

You need a control box with a yellow plug.----------------------------From a 71 or 72 two cylinder 50 HP or from a 72 65 HP these are the only years with the " yellow " plug !!!!------------Simple

Have you checked the fuse ????--------------------Will the starter crank if you jump to it directly with boosters.-----------------Any pictures of the overall wiring condition ???------------------Giving as much information helps as I can not look at YOUR MOTOR --------HEAR YOUR MOTOR -------------FEEL YOUR MOTOR.

I am sorry I haven't given you the best information and i do appreciate your help. Where would i locate the fuse on the motor?&

In the wiring harness near the solenoid ---------------20 amp---------------5/8" long--------------Pull the connecter apart to get at it.---------Some motors had a label on them.-------------Sorry, but you have to be clear in your questions / descriptions.---------------Won't start is different that will not crank with the starter

I am retarded and can't figure it out, I am looking at my motor and I see the selinoid, then I see a box labeled 1-12 that say Orange coil 1, then 2, then 3, #7 is vacant and then I have another thing labeled 1-8 and this one has the wire combination like purple/yellow, purple/white and so on

Just walked into my storage shed to look at a motor just exactly like yours ( 72 triple ) ---------------Took 2 maybe 3 seconds to find the fuse , just above the solenoid !!!

I found that, the fuse was broke, replaced it and after I put the new one and hooked everything up except it has a second ground wire and I'm not to sure where that one goes

Ok, I replaced the fuse and I have power but the choke does not work on the control box. In order to start it I need to use the manual choke on the motor

Sorry, without seeing / feeling your motor I can not give you any more specific advice.---------------------Look for wires that are hooked up wrong / bare / touching ground .------Perhaps check the ohms on the choke coil.
