"I have a 85hp Evinrude 1975.

"I have a 85hp Evinrude 1975. Seems I have the same issue. Runs great on the hose, but no power in the water.
Had this problem for a couple years since my dad gave me this boat, and I don't know when it was last serviced.
I talked to a mechanic recently and he said the first thing he would check would be the compression. He said it would be an hours labor to check it out for me. I guess I'll take it to him next season. I would like to fix the boat, but if its costly then I will just get rid of it.
Anyway, I hope to what fixes your problem."

"Ok I checked that last night

"Ok I checked that last night and thats only one of things I noticed . I aslo found that the bolt that holds the bracket or thing that the throttle cable on , the threads have been stripped out and it will not tight up completely. I started to use my tap and die and just rethread it but want ed to get more suggestions . may be this is why the throttle will not open up all the . Also the spring inside the lever does not pull the timer base thing all the way to down .making me feel that the loose bolt is t blame or the spring needs to bee replaced.what do you guys think?"

"here is a picture of the part

"here is a picture of the part I am talking about . the spring inside does no have a lot af pressure on it. that bolt will not tighten up .
