I am looking to buy a live aboard boat for the first time. I like the silverton aft cabin. The 37 footer i am looking at has twin 454 crusaders. I expect these are not too economical:D. Can anybody give me some input on the silverton, the crusader 454 or a good liveaboard boat to buy? I'd really like some info on what type of hours or miles per gallon I'd get out of those twin 454's.

OK You asked...We have a 34C Silverton with twin 454's. Our boat is a bit lighter than the AFT CABIN you are looking at. At typical cruise speeds we burn about 28-30 gallons an hour with OUR setup. AT WOT we can burn 44-46 gallons an hour and obviously we don't do that much. Personally, I think the Crusader is about the best gasoline engines for marine use. Maintenance for US has been minimal but we do much preventitive maintenance. Our Silverton is a solid boat that does well in 4-6 ft seas... more than I do. As for hours, some members here have run over 2000 hours and more but obvioulsy previous maintenance and use will dictate longevity. My 2001 F-150 is rounding 290,000 miles BUT I do take care of its maintenance and use.

This website you are at will be your absolute best friend with your Crusader engines. While you are at it, check out the Silvertonclub forums for well detailed information on specific models and opinions.

As a first time boat buyer I'd like to get all the info I can before shelling out the dollars;). How do you like your silverton?

We run about 2200-2400 rpm....WE BELIEVE our Silverton 34C is a very solid boat and despite th previous ownerS increasing lack of maintenance, we brought it back to a very clean and usable boat. Very reliable and we frequently are offshore 25 plus miles. Bear in mind there has been substantial financial shakeups at the Silverton factory and while the lastest seems good, find out how this may affect factory needs if any, you may require. Ours needs none nor would never even get close to the factory again so it has no bearing on our requirements
