Newby Tach Question

New to this GREAT forum and al

New to this GREAT forum and already appreciative of the expertise. Just bought a used boat with a Mercury L6 115hp (1979 or 78) Thunderbolt ignition. Didn't come with a tach; bought a used one from salesman but NONE of the settings on back seem to indicate properly - gettin WOT readings anywhere from 7000 to pegged out. Does this motor take a special tach? Read in my SELOC manual that the wrong tach could damage diodes?? Any advice would be appreciated!
