Newbie with a question...

Hello, new to boats and have what is probably a silly question. I have been searching the interweb and can't find much info on OMC's. Little about me, I have been restoring cars and bikes for awhile so I am probably at least an average shade tree mechanic. Anyway I bought a 1990 Donzi GT250, 425hrs on an 460 OMC Cobra looking at pictures it is not a King Cobra. My simple question is should cooling water be coming out of the slots on the bottom of the exhaust bellows or all out of the prop? I can't find any good drawings to figure out the cooling water. Asked my nieghbor who has boats forever and he gave me the deer in the headlights look. And I guess I have 2 questions, where can I order direct fit cooling hoses from.

Thanks in Advance for your time

Rob

Water coming from the bellows is normal. I don't understand the concept of it, but I believe those slots are "reliefs". I'm guessing it's to release some of the exhaust pressure instead of trying to fight the water/current. You should still be getting some water out of the prop though at the same time. Some water will also come out from the front anode.

Some good sites to find parts is this site of course. But also iboats and boats.net

Under the trim ram on the port side of the drive. From the parts diagrams?? It looks like you have the cone clutch drive?Pics? The original hoses are gonna be very hard to find.

Actually we don't know what he has a 90' might be too soon for the Volvo takeover.

We need a pic of the drive from the side capiche... then we can get you close to what you have.

First place I looked, I will get some pictures this evening. Its running like crap anyway even with a complete tune-up. One day running great next sounds like its not firing on a couple cylinders and smoking white, first thought was head gasket but can't find any water where it does not belong. Back to the type drive it does not have a "hump" on the upper. Wife shot a little bit of video of it running lastnight I will have her email it and I will try to post it.

Thanks for your time!!!!

They started the cone clutch in 1990. The big blocks usually had them. [h=1]1990 754APEPWS OMC Cobra Sterndrive UPPER GEAR HOUSING Diagram and Parts[/h]

Sorry what I thought was the outline of where the tag should be was a tag under lots of paint. Mod# 985691 or maybe 965691, Eng 7.5, Ser No. T067194.

Chief to your question yes there should be spitting coming out the exhaust ports as well as the middle of the prop.

Go to the top of this page parts... And find your diagrams.

A 90' can have a 89' drive or engine.

Towards the end of OMC they were mixing and matching parts on engines and drives.

Anytime you want to talk on the phone I can give you the real lowdown on what you have, pm me your phone number, I wish you luck in all your endeavors.

These became Volvo Penta in/around 1994.
Short of the Stringer Drive, anything prior would have been OMC Cobra, OMC King Cobra or OMC Cone Clutch King Cobra.

If the sea water pump impeller rotates CW (when viewed from AFT), it will be a CC KC (due to the third driven gear in the upper unit).

.

And the KC the rarest of the rarest, had the last " HUMP " OMC gave to the poor slobs who purchased OMC products.

Yea the bulge on the top.

I bet the original owners never thought OMC would go out of Business.
